Art Journal

Have been having a little play today and have got as far as a background as below. this is acrylic paints and a bit of book page. I have tried some tissue paper on the other page but it is still drying -is wrinkly but i think will blend as there will be some more colour/stamping to go on when I have decided what!

thinking about stencilling but not sure what colour to go for??
Mickie

Sap Green or a pale grey would be my choice.  Nice page by the way.  If the tissue paper is crinkly that will just add to the texture so don't worry
Beckyb

Lovely page Vonny

vonny

thanks both -had got some green out (not sure what colour sap green is exactly) but like the idea of grey and wouldn't have thought of that!. The tissue has totally blended this time tho I lost a bit of a butterfly wing! all the creases have disappeared.  Very Happy
Jennie

Tissue can look awful and then when it dries it looks great! Nothing wrong in losing a wing  Laughing
Beckyb

So true Jennie but it all adds to the page and once you have finished you won't notice the wing gone no one misses mine 😁

I have stamped and coloured the main image onto card and am going to do the same with the text before deciding what else to add -i find it hard to know how much more to add to any project without going over the top but also getting enough on it so it doesn't look too bare  Confused
Beckyb

Looks great Vonny you can always stamp a text on card and then cut between each line and attach to page does that make any sense  Confused

   Becky x
vonny

yes that makes perfect sense Becky. i plan to either stamp or use rub ons to make my own text for this page and will do on seperate card as you suggest  Smile
Mickie

The page is coming along nicely - you should be pleased with it Laughing
vonny

am pleased so far but have little time at the moment to do any more- think i will book some holiday!
Mickie

That's retirement for you Vonny Laughing  Laughing
vonny

pages finished and in my gallery
Miriam

The page looks lovely Vonny - it takes me ages to do a journal page - always scared I will do too much!
Beckyb

I know what you mean Miriam some people do it in 10-20 minutes wish I could.

  Becky x
vonny

have the same problem Miriam. i have started another one but need to do ATCs etc for the month first before I add to it
Mickie

I'm with you there Miriam - however,   I have been told that a page is never really finished Rolling Eyes

Becky I like the idea of only taking 10-20 mins but this cannot allow for drying time, or can it?
Beckyb

Not sure Mickie that is the bit I am not good at letting things dry  Very Happy

 Becky x
vonny

must admit I find the waiting hard so I do a bit then work on something else. Means a page can take a few weeks tho!
Perhaps we could share pages in progress here -my current one is below

the background paint is the Fresco one that Margaret kindly sent me. think I'm going to add a bit more colour next
Mickie

When I am using paint I find I often taken a little too much and rather than waste what is left, I paint it out onto a journal page.  Yes, I do have a journal with me at all times just for that purpose.  Sometimes the backgrounds I get are light and bright:

Click to see full size image

they can even be quite grungy

Click to see full size image

the trick is not to be precious about colours - just use up whatever colours you have spare whenever until page is "full" of colour.  Then move on to another.
Beckyb

Lovely pages girls I have just finished a page this morning that has taken me a week to do. It is in my gallery.

Here is couple of background I do try to take pic of just background and then I can print off any if I get stuck.

Becky x
vonny

love the very different page backgrounds you have both done. On one of the Gelli plate videos the lady would roll the leftover ink off her brayer into her art journal as well as pressing in any inky stencils etc so nothing was wasted and she got some great backgrounds.
Mickie

Thanks Vonny.  Now that I've got my Gelli plate out, that is really good to know.  I keep a piece of sequin waste in my journals just in case I don't have a stencil handy.
vonny

that's a good idea mickie
Miriam

Lovely backgrounds Becky.

Mickie - lovely idea Smile
vonny

Here are my dripped pages before I start adding anything else

Click to see full size image
Mickie

What did you use Vonny?  Quite like the dripped method but have only really used Dylusions sprays to do this.  Not sure why........... Rolling Eyes
vonny

I used watercolour crayons tho the demo I saw on  You tube used Gelatos. Cover paper with Gesso so it is not absorbent and once dry colour along the top edge then spritz with wate rand the fun begins- make sure you have some tissue etc below the page. If you use a number of collours they tend to blend as they run, but I just wanted black. Expect watercolour pencils would work but might be weaker in colour -and maybe DIs too. Let us know if you try any  Smile
vonny

Getting into this a bit now- have more time as althought I am feeling better I am still not dpoing all my exercise type things so have more time!!

Here are my drip pages finished!

really good page Vonny - I did wonder where you were going to go with it.  Might have to do a bit of plagiarising!

I thought I'd do some gentle drips with the Brushos as I had them out:

Click to see full size image
vonny

like that Mickie -I don't have any Brushos -I assume they are water based? The page really looks like a rainy day!

Fell free to use my page to inspire you- that is a real compliment!
Beckyb

Love the pages you have done Vonny and Mickie I have used watered down acrylic paint and a pipette this journalling is so addictive just wish I felt well enough to do some   Crying or Very sad

   Becky x
vonny

perhaps plan some in your head Becky -that is actually what I did with the drips one -then just had to make it work.

I did try wateredy acryclics but they didn't work as well -but I hadn't gessoed the page so that would have and effect
Mickie

Planning pages out in your head is a good idea Vonny -  would still have to make a note or two though, the memory not being what it was.

You are so right Becky, journalling is addictive - so is making the journals Rolling Eyes

Vonny Brushos are small pots of paint crystals (think powder).  For my page I lightly spritzed the page with water and then lightly sprinkled the Brushos over and to get the drips dropped the Brushos on the top of the page, heavily spritzed on water than then using a drinking straw, blew the colour down the page.  Where it looked like it might be getting muddy I just light dabbed with kitchen towel.

Think I'll have to get a pipette and try Becky's method too.

I'm liking this journalling spot.  Such good fun
Jennie

Great pages everyone!
vonny

oh -Brushos sound like they should be brushed i.e. liquid. thanks for telling me. sounds like you had great fun with that page. I'm sure we did stuff like that at playgroup!! Laughing

Have added more colour to the green pages and althought they look a bit muddly they are now brigther and I think better. Have some text and images half done, so coming along.

Coming along nicely Vonny
Mickie

Thought I would share this journal page that I made today using Gelatos on a rough Gesso surface.  It is something I saw online somewhere and thought I might have a go.

Fabulous Mickie -colours really pop and the image and text go together so well. the beads look real! Did you create the dream catcher image?
vonny

Two new pages done -the green one that I've been working on and a yellow one from one of the papers that I printed on the Gelli-plate- most of the works was done for this one!

Great pages ladies you are having fun.

  Becky x
Mickie

Thank you both. Come and join us Becky, the more the merrier:lol:

Vonny, the dreamcatcher is easy to do - apply texture/grunge paste through a circular design stencil. Die cut a circle for the outer edge. Actually, to make life simpler I die cut the largest circle I was able to do and then just used enough of the stencil to fit. The feathers are die cut; the larger from a stencil that was free in a recent magazine and the smaller is the quill from Tim Holtz mini pen and ink die. The beads are half round glass beads that I coloured with Sharpie pens and the string is just that - string that I dyed with DI Stain.

Your green page has turned out very well and I do like the yellow one too.  Love that stamp - in fact I like all the Doo Lally Pip ones.  They work well in journalling don't they?
vonny

so the beads are real then  Smile You were certainly creative with how you made the dream catcher.
the green page was ok in the end so it shows- if you don't like it add more until you do  Laughing
This is the only Doo Lally Pip stamp I have (bought very recently)  but some of their other characters are pretty quirky so might start a little collection -if I recall there is one lady with googles, great for travel themes!

And yes Becky come and join in -we are having too much fun for just 2 people!
Beckyb

I will see what I can do 😀 I will want a play when my dylusion paints come Keith is collecting them today from PO so I can have a play.

   Becky x
Mickie

oooh yes!  We need an in depth study of those paints  Laughing

Actually, I wonder if I really do need anymore paints.......................probably do Laughing
vonny

sounds a great excuse Becky. I'm sure we would love every ink and paint out there Mickie (as well as a few other mediums) but alas space and money limits us!!
Beckyb

The paints are yummy now just have to find time to play.

  Becky x
Mickie

How do they compare with others Becky?  Really hope you get some play time soon Laughing
Beckyb

Here are some backgrounds with Dylusion paint it is quite runny but gorgeous.

Mickie

I can feel myself weakening Rolling Eyes   I watched a video of Dyanne Reaveley demoing these at CHA and gave myself a stern talking to then
Beckyb

 Becky x
vonny

well you can never really have enough colours of paint/ink can you? I mean, you are trying to match something and the 15 you have just aren't quite right  Laughing
vonny

A very quick page on Gelli plated background, with just a bit of gold embossing added.

Mickie

Like the embossing powder effect on the gelli card
Beckyb

Great page Vonny and you are so right a girl can never have too much paint

     Becky x
Mickie

I like that shop Becky - they are not only quick; they also keep you well informed
vonny

free p&p does make a difference doesn't it? Might be going to Ally Pally next weekend so no spending until then!!
Beckyb

Well I have ordered more some of the colours I want are out of stock so will have to get them later  Very Happy

    Becky x
Mickie

I am jealous - though i shouldn't be; I bought some DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics on Saturday so that ought to be my paint fix for now Rolling Eyes
vonny

it's never enough tho is it?

A great free gift of letter stamps is with the current Simply Handmade magazine. These would be great for journalling
It has upper and lower case as well as numbers, punctuation and a few squiggles. the mag is 4.99 and seems to cover a variety of crafts. I saw it at my craft club yesterday and plan to buy it when I can get ot WH Smith -for the stamps of course
Mickie

Thanks for that Vonny - will look out for the magazine when I go shopping tomorrow.
vonny

One of the projects for the free stamps is a 'home is where the heart' is canvas which I think will translate well onto my large art journal pages
Mickie

I was thinking that too Vonny, although in my case my page will be 6x6!  Guess I shall have to use just the lower case letters.  Thought the project would be ideal to christen my new book
Beckyb

Will look out for mag although I have so many Alphabet stamps.

Here are some backgrounds I did with my Dylusion paints

top page is left hand page and lower is the right-just so you know. Can't fit A3 in my scanner!
Beckyb

Great pages you have certainly got the hang of journalling now I am so trying to get cards made so I can get back to my journalling not sure why but can never seem to do both at the same time.

   Becky x
Mickie

Super page Vonny Keep up the good work:lol:  How many pages in your book do you think?

Desperate to get back to my journalling now but must get some other stuff out of the way first.
vonny

just counted -there are 18 double spreads i.e.A3 and the 2 single A4 pages at each end.
I find it a bit easier now as I am thinking- this journalling is just for me so if I like it is ok. Also you can always go and add a little something later if you want too- didn't someone say a jouranl page is never finished!
vonny

here are some more pages- small journal tho

vonny

doubt I will ever be able to do it again!
vonny

Here is my mermaid tail laid over the background page. I think I will add some other colour to the fin part of the tail and also have more to add to the background. the background is what I roll or print off the tools when gelliping -waste not want not!
