Button Family Canvas

This is the first canvas I've completed on my course with Catherine Scanlon on Creative Classroom.  There are more details about it on my blog, but it is made up of various layers of stamped tissue paper and paint and of course the buttons all sewn on with wire!

Love that Jennie who is the photo of rather a good looking family.

Thanks Becky - my mother and father in law and my husband is the little lad in the front left hand side.  He was about four when it was taken.  The Atkinson's always had good cameras, unlike my family.  There are hardly any of us!
Mickie

Lovely page Jennie.  So nice to have such family pictures.  Don't think there were too many cameras in my family either when I was growing up and once I had my own family I was the photographer (by default I hasten to add) and as such, rarely in front of the camera.

Mickie x
Beckyb

We did'nt have a camera although there seems to be lots of photos that my mum and dad have but my childhood was lovely it was  different to long to explain  Laughing Although I do remember a Brownie being used camera that is.

This is the third canvas.  For all it looks quite simple it was alot of work!  The frames are made from coiled wire and stitched on.  I used Ranger Antique Linen Crackle on the canvas but I didn't like the colour, so I painted it with a weak white acrylic paint and sponged it with tea dye distress ink.

The joined circles represent the six generations of my husband's family from Mary Horewood who came from Ireland to England with her husband in 1860 with nothing (hence the words from Yeat's poem and one of my favourites) to Adrian, our eldest son.

Wonderful canvas Jennie! They'll look marvelous altogether on the wall, hope you'll show us when they're up.

I hate to quote Dawn Bibby, but "stunning" comes to mind.  Jennie these are going to look so good on the wall.

I do like the poem too.  Am off to google it..............!

Thank you for your lovely comments.  I must admit the three do look quite good together and I am really looking forward to doing the fourth one.

Ooooh   looking forward to seeing where you go from the three you've already done Laughing

Beautiful work Jennie and lovely sentiments behind it.
Jennie

This is my final canvas.  Unfortunately it should have a beeswax background, but mine came out a rather odd colour which I melted off and then tried again.  It didn't really fit the colours of the other canvases so I've kept that for another time and I did a tissue paper/gesso/confetti/paint canvas to match the others.

Again the theme is the sea.  Three people in the photograph had a career at sea.  The father (my husband's grandfather) and the little lad in the sailor suit were both first class stewards on P&O liners and my mother in law, the little girl, was in the Royal Navy.

I have really enjoyed this course and I hope I get the chance to do another one with Catherine Scanlon.  She is an excellent tutor.
Jennie

This is what the four look like together:

We have just decorated one of the guest rooms (sounds posh, Robin's old room!) all white with touches of blue.  So the four canvases will be hung over the mantlepiece of the (lovely and original) fireplace in this room.
Jojo79

They look great all together Jennie, and what wonderful stories you have behind each piece.
vonny

What a great set Jennie, well done. they will be a wonderful adornment to the room - bet you get loads of compliments!
craftytrog

They're all fabulous Jennie, so inspiring! Thanks for sharing them with us! x
Mickie

They really do look wonderful together  Jennie.  How lucky you are to have the photos to go with the memories  Laughing

They are lovely together Jennie - you must be really pleased
Jennie

Thanks for all your lovely comments.  We have some lovely photographs of my husband's family.  My mother in law was well in her 40s before she married and had a family, so everyone seems to be from a distant generation!
Jennie

These are the tags I made for the cast.  My last lines (and the last lines of the panto) are:

May good fortune stay with and with it love and laughter
And may you like cinders and her prince live happily ever after!

So the stamps were just perfect!

I think you have done very well with it Jennie.   Laughing  It turned out to be more of a task than it seemed it would be from reading the article.

Does look less textured than the CS one.think i am a bit put off by this now. Hope still to try over Xmas.
Beckyb

Looks lovely Jennie I have done some more and hope to have a play again.

Mickie

Vonny don't be put off.  My awful paper has turned into quite a nice book.  Pictures to follow.   Cool

I don't think it is the technique that is awful.  In my case I used the "wrong colour combination"  - You'll see, all will be revealed when I post the picture. Embarassed

Mickie x
vonny

Glad it has turned out better mickie.
Miriam

Lovely work
Jojo79

Great work.
Jennie

Thought you might like to see the baby shawl I've just finished - it took alot of knitting!  I used 4 ply Shetland wool (we call it jumper weight here).  It is not really a traditional shetland shawl (as in a christening shawl) but one that is usually made for babies as a day shawl.  It has been washed and dresssed in the traditional way.

Glad I got it finished before the baby is born  Very Happy

Well done for finishing it on time Jennie, it is a beautiful piece of work.  Lucky baby will be cosy in that Laughing

beautiful Jennie, a real family heirloom
Jennie

I was in the middle of making this Christmas hanging yesterday when I was "painfully" interrupted, so the reindeer ended up a bit squint!  Friends are staying here in Shetland on their boat over Christmas so it is instead of a Christmas card and I used distress inks on a plastic backed linen paper which came as packing in a parcel recently.  Based on my favourite Mr T tag!

The Christmas hanging ornament is lovely Jennie, sorry about the pain. Smile
Nice when visitors bring their own accommodation Laughing

Fairy Godmother pic is clever - was intentional or a happy accident that the back view cal also be seen?   Smile   Imagine you shimmered quite nicely under the lights on stage Laughing

Lovely ornament Jennie.  I also love the pic of you as fairy godmother - must be great fun.

This is a pic of the envelope and wallet book I've designed for my next scrapbook class.  There are more pictures on my blog.  It certainly holds alot of photographs!

I love making these flowers - just ordinary copy paper, cut into flower shapes, edged with a waterproof ink and scrunched up!  So effective and they are very hardy - my perennials!

really lovely Jennie, including the hardy perennial!

I am really enjoying doing Catherine Scanlon's ATC course over on the Creative Classroom.  I would certainly recommend it, although they are coming a bit fast - two a week!  This is the one I made today - I really like it (lots of layers) and it had to be thick, either on wood or corrugated card.  (I wished I'd used some thinner lace though - it looks a bit heavy).

Click to see full size image
vonny

I love this Jennie, and the lace is fine. I've been looking at an American site that has a very large number of ATC swaps going on and I'm considering taking the plunge and swapping across the pond Smile
Miriam

Jennie, this is lovely - you must be pleased with it
Mickie

Really nice Jennie.

Thanks for sharing

Lovely atc's Jennie I was going to do the course and then forgot all about it so I hope she does another one.

     Becky x
Jennie

Thanks for all your lovely comments.  Becky it really is a good course, loads of different types of techniques.  I think it is being repeated in the summer, which is why I did it now as we will be away in the summer.  I am working on two shadow box ATCs at the moment and just printed some pictures on sticky back canvas to make another two.  All very inspiring and unique Very Happy
Mickie

Shadow box ATCs sound really interesting.  Do hope you post a photo or two Jennie. Laughing

Mickie x
Jennie

Here are the shadowbox ATCs:

Click to see full size image

The box is made from cardboard and covered on the outside and painted inside with acrylic paints.  I had fun cutting out some "whimsical" pictures which are then layered with foam pads.  I had to improvise with the large wings - these were stamped, distress inked and then embossed.  The colours came up lovely and bright.  Alot of fun  Very Happy

And here are the pictures on sticky backed canvas:

Click to see full size image

The intention of the class was to transfer the photos (which the tutor provided) onto sticky back canvas, but I've only got an inkjet printer so couldn't do that (too much water).  So I printed them directly onto the canvas and then painted them very gently with watered down distress inks.  I really love this effect and shall definately be doing more of this.
Mickie

I shall be putting sticky backed canvas on my shopping list.  I love those ATCs Jennie.  Did you have the pictures already or were they supplied as a download from the class?

Miriam

I Love Love Love these ATC's  Jennie

Maggie Smile
Jennie

Mickie - in answer to your questions.  The shadow boxes were made from thick card and were quite easy to make, painting inside first before doing the outside.  And our tutor provided the pictures for the ATCs - they are very cute.

The other thing about this course is that we did an ATC swap - nine of us took part.  I was the only one in the UK, the rest in America.  So far I've received 7 ATCs and everyone has been very generous in sending little pictures and tags etc.

I am really going to miss this course and the people I've met on it.
Mickie

Thanks Jennie.  I am going to have a go at making one.  Do the sides of the box have a particular size?

This really sounds a good course to do.  Shall have to go for it in the summer.

Mickie x
Jennie

The sides are 3/4" - so the back is a normal ATC size, then add the 3/4".  Good luck! and do post your creations.
Mickie

Thanks Jennie.  Will have a go tonight Laughing

Here are the journal pages I did when in Ireland.  I didn't have much in the way of supplies but it did stretch me a bit!  My book is 8" x 8". Pages were either inspired by the landscape and/or weather or were completely random.  Thanks Vonny for giving me the inspiration to give it a go.

your journal is beautiful, Jennie.  Did you paint the flowers or are they stamped?  Margaret

Wonderful Jennie - especially considering you had such limited supplies.

Awesome Jennie.  You must be really pleased with your book Laughing

Mickie x
Jennie

Thank you for your comments - it was fun and I felt it was quite liberating just doing something "off the cuff" instead of having a theme to stick to.

Margaret, the flowers were cut from some rather fancy wrapping paper I got in Edinburgh and a set of napkins I bought at the local shop!  It was alot of cutting out, quite fiddly but worth it.
vonny

this is gorgeous Jennie and just shows how much you can do without a whole room of stash! (just don't let on to our OHs  Laughing )
Beckyb

Well done Jennie they are all lovely must have a go sometime.

This is the mixed media piece I've been working on this week.  Another course with Catherine Scanlon.  Not quite sure it has finished up how I intended when I started though!
